Life does not end with a conviction, and often nor does a case. After a conviction, a criminal defendant may have the right to take an appeal to a higher court or challenge his conviction in other ways.
An appeal is directed toward a legal power higher than the power that made the challenged judgment or ruling. We appeal to the Virginia Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Virginia, and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
